Pioneering new systems for the University of Cincinnati.

See Words: Anywhere is a digital reading proficiency system, offering a transformative method for learning phonics. The initiative originated from a collaborative effort involving the Learning by Design team (a transdisciplinary cooperative of research laboratories in the Digital Futures Initiative within the University of Cincinnati) and the collective expertise of educators, programmers, as well as type and icon designers. The primary goal was to digitize the innovative learning approach pioneered by Renee Steward, converting it into an accessible and effective digital product.

At the core of See Words is its patented font, SeeType, designed taking fully advantage of the variable font technology to facilitate the teaching of phonetics within the context of reading, while also providing support for essential early reading skills such as vocabulary, grammar, prefix/suffixes, and spelling. Powered by a generated object word list, SeeType's font glyphs meticulously cover all forty-four sounds of the English language. This unique approach cues the reading learner to visually and audibly associate with the sounds of letters, reinforcing this crucial connection for future recall.

As a digital reading proficiency system and comprehensive learning method, See Words: Anywhere plays a pivotal role in assisting emerging readers of all ages and dedicated teachers alike. With its innovative blend of technology and pedagogy, this versatile tool not only imparts foundational phonics skills but also addresses broader aspects of early reading, making it a valuable resource for learners and educators alike.
